Solar plate engraving created from the pages of William Dampier’s journal
Image source: Botanical art from Dampier's journal, artist unknown
Image 9.5 x 7.5 cm
Paper 25 x 21 cm
This solar plate engraving refers to William Dampier's voyage to Australia in 1699 when he laid anchor in Sharks Bay in Western Australia. He went ashore in search of fresh water and collected flowers and preserved specimens including the velvety Diplolaena grandiflora. His journal records his wonder at seeing so many flowers in bloom, "unlike any I had seen before".
